The T-101 “scorpion” was developed during the Borg wars by the federation in order to aid in planetary defenses. The demand for armored ground vehicles had been in decline with the increased use of runabouts, how ever the advent of the Borg war made it clear that dedicated armored vehicles were needed to sufficiently hold off waves of Borg drones.

The T-101 “scorpion” was first proposed with the type U+ pulse phaser in mind. Unlike traditional tanks the T-101 was slated to have a series of rounded drums that would allow for the pulse phasers to be fired in multiple directions at once. Star fleet expressed intrest in the idea, but felt that such a vessel would need more heavy fire power, and the design was taken back to the drawing board.

The redesigned T-101 would feature the original 4 pulse phasers with an additional 4 Missile tubes, and a micro quantum torpedo tube for additional heavy fire. The T-101 served in conjunction with the IVA-381s to if not stop at least slow the Borg advance on federation planets. The T-101 was equipped with the same energy dispersion ionic hull plating as the IVA-381, an ablative armor matrix and an 18 CM thick standard Duranium armor plating. The principle sacrifice of the Ionic armor was that it would not only destabilized in bound directed energy weapons, but it made it imposable to erect an energy field with in 2 meters of the vehicle, this in turn how ever freed the space that would have been deticated to a shield generator for other functions. In addition a point defense phaser system was put into place to intercept inbound projectile weapons. The Micro quantum torpedo would be replaced with a type II energy cannon to attain higher yields and eliminate the need to carry stock torpedoes and allowing the missile armament to be increased from 4 to 5 launch tubes.

2383:
February: star fleet issues a request for a new ground assault vessel. The T-101 is first proposed but deemed to lack sufficient fire power.
April: The T-101 is resubmitted with additional fire power, and heavy armor. Star fleet approves the design, and production begins immediately.
2387: T-101s are fitted with ablative armor as well as an advanced ionic shielding system which disperses the impact of directed energy weapons in addition to their existing 18 CM thick standard Duranium armor plating.

2407: To be kept in step with advancing weapon systems the Micro quantum torpedo tube is replaced with a type II energy cannon with triple fire function.

LR-171-A “Puma” Light Reconnaissance Vehicle

The LR-171-A “Puma” Light Reconnaissance Vehicle was designed by the federation in the time between the Borg war and the onset of the Cardassian Conflict. The LE-171 was initially designed to replace the Argo as a light exploratory vehicle, but the onset of the Cardassian war necessitated a completely new design and the idea of simply supplementing one exploratory vehicle with another did not fit star fleets needs at the time.

The LR-171-A was completely rebuilt to fit a new class of specifications issued by star fleet. The new model so vastly different from the original proposed design was given a new build registry, as well as had its designation changed. The LR-171-A was produced along side the T-101 and the IAV-381 in Star Fleet R&D Detroit, and was fitted with the same advanced armor that protected the other vehicles assembled there.

The Federation employed the same modular concept they had used so successfully on the IAV-381 in the construction of the LR-171-A. The LR-171-A was designed with several modular packages that could be fitted on the upper surface of the vehicle. These modules included a rapid fire phaser cannon, a plasma cannon, a long range communications relay, an advanced sensor package, and a type I energy cannon. Each vehicle could hold two modules one in the active position the other stored under the aft compartment. Modules could be changed quickly even in battle conditions allowing the LR-171-A to be extremely versatile in action.

2404:
September: The Federation issues a request for a new light exploratory vehicle to replace the aging argo class.
December: The LE-171 as originally designed was rejected when the Federation changed the requirements for the new vehicle as Cardassian-Federation tension increased.

2405:
Febuary: The LE-171 is resubmitted as the LR-171-A. The federation approves the new design for additional testing.
March: Star Fleet R&D Detroit produces 12 LR-171-A for testing. The new models are outfitted with the same advanced armor used in the T-101 and the IVA-381.

2406: The new LR-171-A passes all inspections and regular model production begins.

LE-322-T “Argo” Light exploratory vehicle

The Argo Was Developed in early 2378 to compliment the Argo class run about. Designed to fulfill the simple function of transporting research teams, the argo was not designed with combat in mind. Initially equipped with only a light phaser rifle the armament would eventually be increased during the Borg war, but the Argo would remain geared more towards research rather then combat. The Argo proved to be extremely reliable in a variety of terrain, and as such the production rate of the craft as increased.

Through its operation Argo production has remained closely tied to the production of the Runabout of the same name. Both units proved to be extremely successful and were shown great favor by the crews who utilized them. How ever as the out break of the Borg war would see a tremendous change in demands for Vehicle performance. Development of the Striker, Scorpion, and eventually Puma would detract greatly from the popularity of the Argo. The Argo simply no longer offered the protection needed against hostiles, and while the effort was made to increase the fire power of the Argo’s Rifle the Craft didn’t have the frame work to sufficiently protect teams in the line of fire. The Argo runabout would continue to see success no modified to carry the LR-171-A Puma into combat during the cardassian war.

2378:
May: The Federation issues a request for a new vehicle to aid planetary expedition crews. Four Bids come back including the LE-322 “Argo”. All four bids fail to meet specifications and are returned for further refinement.
July: The LE-322-T is resubmitted and Accepted by Starfleet. 200 production modles are ordered.
September: Field testing begins on the Enterprise E. After three “dry runs” The Argo is given a proper field test on Kolarus III where is preformed superbly.

2380: the out break of the Borg war leads to high demands for armoured troup transports. The Argo initially manages to fill the role how ever the increasingly hostile nature of planetary action leads to the loss of favor and plans are submitted to modify the Argo.

2385: The power of the Phaser rifle is increased ten fold, but it is not sufficient to save the argo from falling out of favor as more and more the unit is replaced by the Striker personnel transport.

The IVA-381 was designed as a method to protect Star fleet personnel from Borg assimilation, as well as from harsh environmental conditions. Initially nothing more then a modified hull, the Federation began production on the IVA-381 as an official heavy ground transport mid way through 2382. The Craft was bulky and inefficient, but it protected against most Borg attacks.

Over the course of the next 4 years the design of the IVA-381 was refined, and adapted to fallow the modular design of most star fleet craft. The most common of the IVA-381s remained the personnel carrier model how ever models were produced ranging from a medical evacuation system, to a mobile pulse cannon, or even a mobile research lab for the star fleet core of engineers. The IVA-381 was deployed through out federation worlds to serve as a mobile bunker in case of a Borg attack.

A combination of Ablative armor and an advanced Ionic field disrupted most directed energy weapons upon impact allowing the transport to fair extremely well during combat. The transport proved it self time and time again both in combat, and in scientific roles, as an extremely viable multiuse platform. The advanced modular nature of the IVA-381 allowed for rapid part rotations. For example an IVA-381 using the combat relay platform can have the subspace relay module removed, be fitted with a pulse cannon module, and be on the battle field in less than 15 minutes.

2382:
June: Federation marines on Jovus III are pinned down by Borg drones well attempting to rescue trapped civilians. Evacuation shuttles fail to reach the trapped marines in time. Star fleet recognized the need for an armored transport to protect star fleet personnel serving on the front lines.
September: The Montar yards convert a small fleet of ten Danube run about hulls into armored transports as an impromptu measure well the new striker is in development.

2383:
Febuary: The first fully completed IVA-381 Striker is produced at Star fleet R&D Detroit.
April: Research on modularization of the unit components begins. The first three modular sections are developed, medical evacuation, combat relay, and pulse cannon, in addition to the existing transport platform.
June: Additional modular units are introduced, the engineering module, photonic missile station, and long range reconnaissance platform.

2387: IVA-381’s are fitted with ablative armor as well as an advanced ionic shielding system which disperses the impact of directed energy weapons.
